Monster of the Week #38 – Lillith

LILLITH

This week we delve into the depths of Diablo IV’s darkest dungeons and will be looking at the Mother of all – Lillith, an arch-devil who acts as the main antangonist for the Diablo IV game. Once again we peer into homebrew stats to retrieve stats worthy of a top level party, and give them a rough time in the process!

So to start, who is Lillith? For those unfamiliar, Lillith deatures in the latest Diablo game, is a formidable arch devil, who was the daughter of Mephisto and the sister of Lucion. She was known to all of Sanctuary as the Queen of the Succubi and was at one time a lover of Inarius – an archangel youo encounter throughout your playthrough of Diablo. Lillith epitomizes temptation and manipulation, usually charming her way through situations (at least – that’s how it’s went from the point I have got to!).

So that’s the context of this creature, and now to hop in and see some fearsome homebrew stats for her (you can find the full page of these stats here.

The Basics

Lillith has a whopping 297 HP pool, an AC of 22 (natural armour), can run at 40ft, fly at 60 ft and has the following intense stat array:

STRDEXCONINTWISCHA
28 (+9)28 (+9)28 (+9)30 (+10)30 (+10)30 (+10)

Regarding her defences, she in proficient in Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence and Charisma saving throws. In addition, she is immune to being poisoned, or damaged by fire or poison. She also has resistance to cold, bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonmagical attacks that are not silver as part of her repotoire of defences.

There are a few more things here too, but that is main stuff! While this stat array is immence, and her defences are vast – it really fits the vibe of Lillith from the DIablo 4 game. Lillith is built up as an imposing presence right from the introductory cutscene, and these abtilities so far really help illustrate this.

Origins

Origins of Lillith in Mythology and Folklore: The character of Lillith has deep roots in ancient mythology and folklore, transcending cultures and captivating the imaginations of storytellers throughout history. Although interpretations vary, Lillith is often associated with themes of feminine rebellion, temptation, and supernatural seduction.

Abilities

Normal Attack Actions

Lillith can make up to 3 attacks with her multiattack. 1 with her kiss and 2 with her melee weapon – the Amaheuris.

Starting with Lillith’s Kiss – it has a +16 to hit, reach 5 foot reach and can target one individual. On a hit, it deals 41 (5d12 + 9) necrotic damage and in addition, the target must make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or become charmed by Lilith until the end of their next turn.

Chances are, Lillith’s Kiss could charm it’s target, so other than a decent damage output, the charm (if successful) can cause multiple complications – especially if it makes PC’s unable to attack her until they pass the save! This is something that is right on brand with Lillith!

The other main attack action Lillith has her melee blade, the Amaheuris. This is a weapon attack (melee weapon attack) which has a +16 to hit, can hit one target within a 5 foot reach and will deal an average of 18 slashing damage (or 2d8 + 9 if you are rolling). When hit, targets must make a DC 24 Constitution saving throw or suffer 18 (4d8) necrotic damage or half if they pass.

Legendary Actions

Lilith can make up to three legendary actions with the ones added to this homebrew very thematic with how Lillith is represetned in the game. Many of these either tie in with her devlish nature, or the more manipulative or seductive side.

  • Kiss and Spell. Lilith makes a Lilith’s Kiss attack and casts a spell.
  • Lure (costs 2 actions). One creature that Lilith can see and that can see her must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or use its reaction to move its full speed in a direction Lilith desires.
  • Wing Buffet (costs 2 actions). Lilith buffets the air with her wings to create a 20-foot cone of powerful wind. All creatures caught in this area must succeed at a DC 25 Strength check or be knocked prone and pushed 15 feet away from Lilith.
  • Fiendish Recovery (costs 2 actions). Lilith recovers 50 hit points and ends one condition affecting her.

These actions could be a great way to tease or ‘play’ with a party of adventurers. Similar to how many run Strahd, the above legendary actions could be used as ways to taunt players or flaunt Lillith’s powerful abilities. Some really great thoughts here from the creatures.

To top all of this off, Lillith has 3 legendary resistances each day.

So why does Lillith take the spotlight this week?

Lillith’s multifaceted abilities make her an engaging challenge for high-level parties, at least on paper. As she is portrayed as an incredibly intelligent schemer, her proficiency in manipulation and strategy can make her dangerous outside of combat too. A GM could easily and realistically have her leverage party weaknesses and have her prepare for a party’s master plan – without it feeling forced from the GM’s perspective. Strahd von Zarovich is another adversary who GMs are encourged to play intelligently, and I feel Lillith is another perfect candidate for this.

Lillith also has a wealth of lore you can pull from. Whether you are going for the Diablo 4 spin, or want to use real-life mythology – there’s plenty of material to get you going to help integrate Lillith into your games.

Lastly, this stat block for Lillith is intense – with not only a significant amount of abilities, legendary actions and saves, but she can withstand serious damage even for a high level party.
